Shennongjia, the “Natural Botanical Garden”, is situated in the remote northwest of Hube
i, China. It covers an area of 3,253 square kilometers. Its name, which is roughly translated a
s “Shennong’s ladder”, commemorates the feats of Emperor Shennong, who is believed to be
thefounder of herbal medicine. Legend says that he built a ladder with a big tree and climbed
a precipice for the special herbs growing there.
As one of the few remaining primeval forests in central China, Shennongjia is home to rich
plants and animals. There are 3,700 species of plants, 39 of which are rare. Of the 1,050 specie
s of animals, 70 have been officially protected by the state government. In recent years, the re
gion has also gained the fame as the habitat of “white” animals and mysterious “wildman”.
Besides the charming wild scenery in Shennongjia, the local traditional culture is another
attraction. It is known that the mythical epic Hei An Zhuan is found to be the Genesis of Chin
ese Han nationality. Those melodies like the “Song for the Dead”, and the “Song of Ceremon
y”, etc.enjoyed great popularity in ancient history. The Tujia marriage custom and the natives’
everydaylife are different features of adventure for tourists from the world .
